In the two Tri-Duty bakeoffs I've been in. I've noticed quite a few able alts among the familiar winners. I'm wondering what exactly is it that gives them an favor. I undergo some ideas of my own but I'd like to hear your thoughts. Sailing: Personally. I'm the write of sailor who likes to chain platforms so being at able level is torturous to me. But I know other people like to create huge vegases so having fewer platforms and go blocks to get in the way helps them. So. I'm guessing this is where being able has it's advantages. Carpentry: I'm guessing that having smaller holes allows people to get masterpieces faster which makes up for the penalty for breaking a masterpiece arrange when you finish your feature meter. Bilging: Obviously having fewer colors makes it easier to make bingos and sea donkeys but I also thought that combos were worth less at the lower levels. Maybe the scoring penalty due to being at a low level isn't as bad as I thought it was. Also is there a way to design a bakeoff that discourages the use of able alts? For example does a longer bakeoff favor the players with higher ratings? How long is long enough? Does starting with beat bilge/beat damage advance one group over the other? Those are the two main bakeoff changes that I can evaluate of but I'd love to hear more ideas.
The able bilge syndrome is pretty obvious. You can incred in your sleep when you're able - just about every move gives a 3x3 with a great cascade. I've heard that the top bilgers do better on 9 stars but it's certainly easier to get that incred on 1-3 stars. Able sails is tougher. Most of the top sailors I know say that the GM amount of platforms is easiest for them. Still an Ult on a Renowned/GM alt may consistently defeat folks on their high-rated mains. Able carp is a quick go away followed by needing a lot of luck. Two free MPs (one with a grain bonus) is instant sparklies but then the small holes and low stars can grip you if the pieces don't cooperate. Able object is favored in shorter rounds. The extra points from 9-star giant holes ordain win in longer rounds. The only way to prevent the benefits any able alts may have is to change the scoring system at the low levels. damage was already tweaked although possibly not enough. Carpentry I think is nearly balanced although it could count the first two free MP holes for less points. Sails may need a bilge-like score reduction for those vegases on low stars. It's primarily a GD issue not an events issue. For now the events are technically fair because everyone can able alt although I don't personally desire that someone is playing 3-star bilge while I'm swapping for bingos at 9 stars. The temporary fixes for event runners would be to have longer rounds that would compel populate to play up to higher star levels or to enforce minimum stat requirements. ---------------------------------------- Polly on HunterCaptain of FlocktartsLady of This End UpAvatar by Hedvvig
I just experience that it is frustrating to see populate on alts winning. My personal feelings on the be is if I can't win on my main using an alt for an easier scoring system such as being able to build huge Vegas chains with an able alt on sails then I would be cheating. Since I don't cheat. I don't do it. It's one of the reasons I don't do bakeoffs on other oceans. Of cover people ordain say that alts are a game mechanic and using a game mechanic isn't cheating. I personally would like to see an experience requirement. It would prevent a brand new alt coming in and would compel the cross-ocean bakeoff'ers to at least puzzle for a little while on the ocean they are going to. ---------------------------------------- Jolyma. Cheating is not abiding by the rules of the competition. Using alts when permitted by the rules of the competition is not cheating. I know more people who use alts to forbid tells and chatspam while concentrating than who do it to get a different scoring matrix at the lower level. Creating requirements for alts just means spending more time on the alt before the competition which of cover populate ordain be happy to do for a familiar competition. It also limits the willingness of the Ringers to alter prizes (the policy generally being in favour of widespread and non-discriminatory participation criteria for the sake of fun!). Personally. I don't think it's a problem and I don't consider it an air that should be addressed. That noted the only real deterrent to using a different pirate is to undergo the consider inscribed with the winner's name and the only way to alter use of alts less advantageous is to alter the competition very very desire so that you go over the feature levels into mid-level ones where there are no easy increds and scoring is a bit lower than at the higher feature levels. Not sure a five hour bakeoff would be particularly fun though. ---------------------------------------- Sweetiepiepi. Nav of Tyr's Own. Hypnos proposed. Bilging: It shouldn't be easier to score well on a less than 7 piece board in theory. undergo there actually been top bilge cook off winners that were able here? Note there is a huge difference between getting a good enough score to get an Incred and getting the top advance in a Duty inform. object: Carp is easier with a Novice character in a Carp cook off if/ the cook off is short enough. Once you aren't given the freebie hole it's much harder to do well in Carp and if a bake off is long enough a Novice's standing should increase in theory. Sailing: This puzzle is just broken. It's easier to win on an Able engrave. Plain as that. Wrong and broken. ---------------------------------------- ! ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times measure edit by at Oct 29. 2007 12:37:30 PM]
Ok. I guess I should present some more facts before I start spouting off about able alts. Below. I furnish the results from a bring together recent bakeoffs and the ranking of the pirates who were in the top 5 of the duty report. I've underlined the pirates that I consider to be "able alts". Bilge only has a bring together alts in the top 5 in any ocean. Carpentry has 5 alts all in the short round format. Sailing has 18 alts in both bunco round and multi-round events. The top 5 finishers from the preliminaries of the Tri-duty bakeoffs a 10 minute round:Bilge:Midnight:Adalaide - Sublime/UltJokert - Illustrious/UltHatchetback - Illustrious/UltMadmarymeade - change/UltSink - Expert/UltViridian:Frankp - Solid/GM

The top 5 finalists from the Viridian Bakeoff Bonanza a 10 minute round preliminary round followed by a 20 minute final: (Note that these ratings are 1 month after the event finished)Bilge:Dyrbar - change/UltHeffalumpy - Sublime/UltAroven - Solid/UltNattee - Expert/UltFaldez - Weighty/UltSailing:Aisso - Sublime/Ult
Simply put able alts are more likely to be "familiar whores" who just pop onto an ocean clutch a consider and disappear with it never to be seen again. As an event runner. I personally find this distasteful and would like to design my events to hinder this type of activity. This isn't a blanket statement on all bakeoffs. You run your events how you decide. I'm trying.
