French in French Africa

First some thoughts about the French language. Proper French is kind of like playing bagpipes. When the pipes are played well they produce one of the most beautiful sounds heard. Yet anything less than well-played produces the cacophony of a goose giving birth. And getting to the point of playing the pipes well is really really hard as I've had chance to observe.
French when spoken well is a beautiful language. But it's really hard to speak [and understand] it well. There are a number of technical reasons for this I'm sure perhaps purposefully conceived of by the aristocratic classes of Old that made French the exclusive language that it is.
In some sense to speak French well you have to be in a special club a country club if you will. Club membership entails understanding all the secret rules of grammar and pronunciation many of which are based not on any kind of linguistic logic that I can conceive of but on an aesthetic of what sounds nice. One must gain an intuitive discernment to know which of the consonants and vowels one is actually supposed to pronounce in any word and equally to know which letters hang onto words for no apparent reason other than to trick novice speakers (especially English speakers as it is since so many French words look deceptively identical to their English counterparts).
Club membership also entails that you have the time and training [and trainer perhaps] to learn to speak the words properly. Speaking French not only requires amazing agility of the mouth muscles but a considerable amount of mouth muscle memory as well. How else is one to pronounce their R's.
Having said all that learning and speaking French in French Africa has its advantages. To begin with most Africans speak French more slowly rhythmically and with "courser" pronunciations than Frenchy-French. For example. Beninese tend to roll their R's versus the French slurring. Grammatical rules and constructions are also more simply employed if not often ignored and violated. Fewer verb tenses are used. For example in Benin the subjunctive virtually doesn't even exist (only in the linguistic-grammatical sense of course).
Bien sure learning French in Benin also brings unique challenges especially for one wanting to acquire a fairly proper comprehension of the language. As with any language that is spoke in different countries and regions in Benin also certain French words are wielded and employed differently. "Deucement," for example is an exclamatory word on a number of meanings: slowly (as adj.); slow down!; be careful!. I'm sorry! "Petites choses" (little things) is underwear; pate ("paste") is a staple food here made from corn flour and water. Another common difficulty especially in more rural parts of Benin is speaking and understanding folks who speak a French that is heavily accented by a tongue more accustomed to speaking a local languages than French.
All things considered though learning decent French is indeed probable and possible here. The Beninese especially tend to be patient and amiable (if not sometimes too forgiving) with an American struggling to learning French. When I've finally reached the point fluency. I may not be a card-carrying member of the high-French country club and I might indeed speak with a tell-tale West-African accent. But I don't really see any loss in either of these prospects.

In cut class I learned a lot. Like how to say "good morning.. my name is...." Bonjour!! Je m'appelle.......... When we had tests coming up I didn't think that it was going to be hard!! But I studied anyway because I wanted to get a good grade and guess what? I did. which was so unexpected..
I learned how to say the numbers in French. For example: deux, trois cinq and dix. I can go up to 20!! vingt hopefully that is how you recite it. I have this Word tip that I put vocabulary in. it is almost the same word tip that I put my words that I don't experience in my Language Arts class but the difference is that I put FRENCH WORDS in it.
On my second sheet I learned how to say forks & teacups and some words about measure. To me it was really hard to memorize these words because I had already tried to hit the books some words but it didn't work. We also learned how to say 8 o'clock in the morning... Il est hurit heures du matin. I also learned how to say other times too. When I had to learn the times I thought that it was going to be really hard. and it was. I also learned how to say "En France. Sylvie et Paul eat dane un bon restaurant ce soir. " which means "In France. Sylvie and Paul will dine at a good restaurant at night.". I also learned how to say: les desserts (the desserts) les hors-d'oeuvre (the appetizers) and some other things about restaurants and call the things in the restaurant (mostly). I learned how to say "I'm cold/I'm hungry" (J'ai froid/J'ai faim). Or anything else that goes with being.... like thirsty or scared. it depends on the mood I guess. On summon 32. I open out how to say if you are OK in this case: Qu'est-ce que tu as. Paul? Ca ne va pas? Translation: What's wrong Paul? are you not feeling OK? I got to learn how to say (I have) a headache sore throat and you consume too much Coke on summon 38 I learned how to adjudge: hat change and coat.. chapeau robe et manteau. We also learned how to way des gants gloves. Je port... I'm wearing. and on summon 39 we did a Vrai and Faux. adjust or False.. about the clothes. I sooo didn't get all of them right the first time.

Bible based, french language program on a budget

 <modified>2007-12-09T14:31+00:00

Many times as homeschoolers we wish to teach our children a foreign language but funds as come up as talent perhaps hinder us from taking on this contend. Let me share with you what our family is using to further our horizons and ability to reach others for Christ. I took French for 4 years in high school. I retained quite a bit of it until we moved to Japan and change surface then when trying to hit the books Japanese. French words would turn off my play. This was quite confusing to our friends! When we moved to Arizona. I tried to hit the books a bit of Spanish but then Japanese and French words would go out of my mouth so I eventually gave up trying. Our daughter started public high school and she took her first year of cut as well. She has always had her eye on make and so it makes end comprehend for her to learn this language. We came approve to homeschooling this year and I really DID NOT think my husband would want us to keep up with French but he surprised me by telling me to teach everyone. We open a used (though it looked pretty new to me) curriculum online at another and bought that from her. We have been so pleased with this schedule!! The has been a blessing to us. It is based on scripture and the company is working with groups desire Wycliffe Bible Translators and others to prepare missionary families in training for their service to God. The be of the program at their web site is $129.95 but the schedule is set up to take a younger child 3 years to end so if you are starting off very early then this is where the frugal part comes in. Basically you are paying less than $45 a year for foreign language. That's probably the best deal I've seen around!! If you are a high school age aim you undergo to complete level 1 and level 2 to meet express standards but if you start off with it early then you can catch deals or maybe even sight it on ebay. The workbook comes with 2 CD's with vocal examples. We have also purchased at several downloads to supplement. They were all less than a dollar and are songs in French. The children have really enjoyed listening to these. Some other things we have used to supplement were things we already had in our house. For dilate we sometimes watch our movies in French just to get used to hearing the language. I evaluate their favorite line is "Je suis un ogre!" from Shreck... LOL... I can't tell you how quickly my previous cut training has go beat compel approve into my brain using this program. We pay about 20 minutes a day practicing and listening. We also do some writing and I will catch the children through out the day and say something to them in cut and have them repeat and ingeminate or answer in French. It has been great so far. The great thing is that even if I didn't have a accent of some basic French in my arsenal. I am pretty confident this would be easy to learn and teach to my children. The younger ones have picked up on it just as well as my daughter and I. If you are looking at starting a foreign language but don't want to spend three or four hundred dollars on a program and you want it to be Bible based with the goal of reaching folks for Christ then this is your program!!
