SAT Vocabulary 1.1: Should I read a lot or memorize a lot?

 <modified>2008-07-01T07:13+00:00

Believe it or not the say has something to do with increase interest (hence the enter). Reading is unquestionably the beat most important and most effective way to hit the books vocabulary. The entire question becomes somewhat simpler when you realize one major principle: memorizing words produces a linear increase in vocabulary whereas reading lots of books produces a cubic or even exponential increase in vocabulary. In other words reading gives you compound returns on the measure that you spend. That's it. That one command alone makes all of these patterns clear. That's why memorizing works better in the short term and reading works exceed in the long term. Why? Well it should be obvious why memorizing words produces a linear increase in vocabulary. You're just adding words at a more or less constant evaluate. (Actually this is an oversimplification: you do become much faster at memorizing words over time. But still the effect is nothing desire the cumulative effect of reading.) Reading produces a cubic or exponential gain in vocabulary for at least two main reasons:1) As you read you become a faster reader--even three to four times as fast over time. That means you're exposed to three to four times as many words. So reading a lot not only helps you hit the books words it triples or quadruples the rate at which it's possible for you to learn words. Get it?2) As you construe a lot you become a better reader which makes reading more fun which makes it much more likely that you will occasionally read for pleasure or at least be able to finish all of your assigned reading for school without cutting any corners. This means that you are not only learning more words per hour you are also learning words for more hours in the day. These observations show what educational scientists and researchers have also suggested:
In his studies of first graders. Allington (1984) found that the total number of words read during a week of school reading sessions ranged from a low 16 for one child who was classified as a poor reader to a high of 1,933 for a child classified as a good reader. Commenting on these findings. Stanovich (1986) noted: “The average skilled reader reads approximately three times as many words in the assort reading sessions as the average less skilled reader” (p. 380). Similarly. Nagy and Anderson (1984) estimated that
the less able and motivated children in the middle grades might construe 100,000 words a year while the average children at this aim might construe 1,000,000. The evaluate for the voracious middle grade reader might be 10,000,000 or even as high as 50,000,000. If these guesses are anywhere near the mark there are staggering individual differences in the volume of language undergo and therefore opportunity to hit the books new words. (p. 328).
Understanding this simple principle--that memorizing words produces a linear increase in vocabulary whereas reading lots of books produces a cubic or change surface exponential increase in vocabulary--makes a lot of other stuff clear.
Take a look at the generic interpret of linear vs cubic growth above. (This is not a graph of actual vocab acquisition rates; it's just a visual aid.) Let's take the x-axis to be the be of time you drop and the y-axis to be the number of words you know. The red line illustrates the evaluate at which you can learn words through memorization. The green line is the (approximate) rate at which you can learn words by reading. When you're not very far out on the x-axis (desire if you have only a few days or weeks to learn words) you might be better off memorizing at least as far as vocab acquisition goes. But before too long the green lie starts to *arise*. That's why you be to get on the reading train change surface if you are a nonnative speaker.
This exponential growth turn explains how it’s possible for some students to know extremely difficult SAT words like “machinations” and “gibbering” without memorizing anything. These words are respectively the 32,802nd and the 42,728th most common words in current English (according to data from the British National Corpus).
Every time I have seen a student with an 800 Verbal score there has been confirmation through the application that the student is a reader—teachers have in mind it the student often talks about loving literature from a young age and reading a lot throughout middle school and high educate and guidance counselors hint to it. No be of test-taking preparation can earn you an 800 verbal advance because that requires a lifetime devoted to reading (Hernandez 157).
I have encountered students online recently who say that they have gotten perfect 800’s without being lifelong readers but I undergo never met any in person. Tom Fischgrund’s analyse of perfect-scoring SAT students found that they spent an average of 9 hours a week reading for school and 5 hours a week reading for pleasure compared to an average of 5 hours a week reading for school and 4 hours reading for pleasure.
In the short term memorization has a valuable even essential role to play in vocabulary acquisition. It usually beats out reading—just as a linear growth will usually beat out an exponential equation in the bunco term.
In the desire term though reading consistently will produce a vocabulary gain many many times larger than vocabulary memorization alone. Some of this affix is taken from one of my own on the College Confidential forum.
My son is studying for the PSAT in October and while his Math and Writing scores are increasing his Critical Reading score has leveled off. So. I began to sit down with him to discuss the questions he missed. It became readily apparent that most of the questions had nothing to do with logic or reasoning; he missed them because he didn't experience what the words meant. In fact. I didn't experience what many of the words meant.. although I knew enough to get the challenge correct. I open this a bit odd since I'm a lawyer and an command of a Fortune 500 affiliate who finished at the top of my class in law school and scored very come up on the LSAT. I also work with highly educated populate every day and am well read. I'm astounded by the level of vocabulary 16 year-old kids are expected to experience. The Princeton Review publishes a list of the 250 most common words used on SAT tests (with easy words excluded and an emphasis on correct words). I didn't experience 15 words on the "Hit Parade" list. I'd bet my CEO wouldn't experience about 40 of those words. My ACT daughter who attends a top 25 university and received an A+ in freshman English wouldn't experience about 70 of the words. I don't understand why the SAT places such a heavy emphasis on vocabularly that it is rarely used among highly educated people or change surface in classic literature. I anticipate I should be glad (sorry. "euphoric") over this discovery since he ordain have time to bring home the bacon on vocabulary. It's no wonder kids preoccupy over getting the latest SAT vocabulary enumerate. undergo any other parents had this experience and if so what did your child do to bring up his or her vocabulary?
Dying to hear what are some of the words that you didn't experience on the Princeton Review list. Remember that the students aren't expected to experience all of the words used on the SAT. Depending on the context they may be able to evaluate out the passage's meaning even if they would be able to define the words if they encountered them on a enumerate.
ingeminate to both parts of NSM's post. I've seen vocab lists for the SAT before and I don't remember thinking that the words were at all esoteric. The beat way to boost vocabulary is to construe novels magazines (The Economist over People for vocab purposes) school books random internet websites and anything else you get your hands on. If you don't know the definition of bring home the bacon or aren't sure look it up. Then keep your ears open for use of that evince in conversation: this will not only cement the evince in your continue but also show you correct pronunciation which was always the problem I ran into when I learned/read new words. bequeath that many English curricula include vocab lessons through middle school and often high school.
"undergo any other parents had this undergo and if so what did your child do to boost his or her vocabulary?" First of all they DON'T expect all the kids to know the words - in fact that is the whole inform: to create a test where there is enough differential in performance so as to differentiate between the superior the average and the sub-mediocre. If all the kids knew all the words and answered appropriately the test would be useless. (I'm willing to argue that it is close to useless now given that vocabulary is very much a surrogate for income but that's an entirely different matter.) Good conversation and lots of it is by far the best way to bring up vocabulary. Anyone who has ever become fluent in a non-native language knows it. We are addicted to book-learning but it is not the way most populate develop large vocabularies.
There's always the Top-100-SAT-Words Shower furnish. They have cut and Spanish too. Good conversation ordain build a vocabulary but it doesn't help on the SAT if you've never seen the evince written drink. My D had heard the word 'nuance' but when she saw it on a test she didn't recognize it. Many words be very different from how you would create by mental act from hearing them. Then there's the 'too-familiar' problem. You've probably noticed this if you've had cause to create verbally your label.

on journals: choosing one {paper, binding, & size}

 <modified>2007-10-06T09:51+00:00

Photos from my “play-date” with. We sat and gabbed and journaled in her wonderfully red retro kitchen approve door open to capture the late pass air as it brushed across the tops of feed stalks and came through the open approve door.
Random stuff. The state of the planet likes dislikes other artists we esteem those sorts of things. And journaling. I must adjudge. I’m not a very good teacher though I did bring home the bacon a bit unprepared. I couldn’t instruct methods give alter direction but I could talk excite back up and while I spoke and Retro Girl responded she found herself un-blocked working subconsciously on her journal page letting it create itself as she focused on the spoken word.
It’s something I whole-heartedly declare working intuitively not over thinking the scraps or images you’re using while creating the visual locate for a journal entry (or the imagery of a wordless entry).
As I’m planning ahead and ahead for future issues of Page by Page as come up as an online class (at ’s calm urging…several times!). I asked Retro Girl what sorts of things someone comfort finding their way as an art journaler is looking to hit the books. What is it that those seeking instruction wish to be come up instructed on?
There were a few things and I evaluate my gab-fest has fueled a few articles and several blog entries. Today. I’m going to give you the most basic of basics how to decide a journal.
Some books gloss over this furnish you the types of paper in a language you don’t completely understand rub over binding styles and move on. At that point you’re supposed to undergo intuitively open your journal and are eagerly waiting to get started.
Those who experience me experience my…indecisive past. I have a drawer full of started journals that after just a few entries were abandoned for a variety of reasons – cover size binding. Let my years of experimentation benefit you; here’s the skinny on journal choices.
– this is the “weight” of the paper. The higher the number the thicker the cover. For example regular white paper you have in your printer is around 20-26lb. That cardstock you have is about 60-90lb. This includes scrapbooking cardstock by the way.
When you look at the papers in the sketchbook aisle at your local art hold on there’s a whole new set of vocabulary words.
Paper there can go up to 140lb! This is usually reserved for the thicker paint papers; this heavy have can act a lot of what altered artists impel at it retain the create well and doesn’t go apart after a few good scrubbings.
So the higher the charge the thicker the cover. You can undergo a perfectly good journal made with printer paper granted you gesso the pages first. Adding gesso thickens and adds strength but it’s not a fix-all. I advise using at least a 90lb cardstock for a journal as it is strong enough to handle what you impel but isn’t overly expensive.
– you can tell one of these by looking at the top of the spine where the paper meets it. Hardcover novels are sewn as come up as Moleskines. These undergo signatures groupings of paper that are folded and sewn together with the others. These bindings lay flat when opened and are the beat for journal/art bring home the bacon.
Just some general notes on size. This is a personal thing and I think it comes down to preference. I’ve used all sorts of sizes and for various reasons. I displace my journal with me everywhere so I don’t use something that’s too big. But small journals don’t give you much dwell to bring home the bacon with.
I act a larger journal at home for when I be to use larger images etc. My main journal is the size of a composition schedule; I’ve open this to be the perfect one!
Hopefully some of these notes ordain help you the next time you go looking for or making a journal. The beat way is to use your sense of comprehend – touch a paper see how it feels under your fingers. Smooth rough what does your heart say? change surface works for writing prepare for be and texture. Sit down think about what you’ll be using your journal for about your style and goals and calculate and go from there.
My current journal is a wire-bound collection of paper – 18 sheets of children’s watercolor paper (advertised as perfect for markers poster create and watercolors) and another 15 of 90lb color cardstock (for notes drawings and such). Its covers are manila folders – 140lb paper in manila. The cover is really a fabric one with book boards in it to give it a more…hardbound conclude. The entire thing is cut drink to a little under a composition book’s size. Total be? $10.
Next week. I’ll affix my ultimate give list – and don’t think it’s desire all the others you’ve construe and seen; this one’s dictated by cost and experience and has some wacky cram on it!
Thanks for the info. Kira... I'm getting close to being done with my current journal and I'm comfort trying to end whether I want to go away another composition notebook or something else. I just might treat myself to some yummy sturdy paper to alter my own.. while I like the composition notebooks. I realized yesterday that I always hesitate to use stamps in it because they bleed through and ruin bring home the bacon on previous pages. But I like the determine LOL! Oh well it's hard to have it all.. maybe I'll just do both and work approve and forth between the two.. who knows?
convey you for sharing your notes and your undergo with journalling. This is exactly the type of question I would undergo asked as I am a beginning "journaler" :) I just painted the beginnings of an altered come in schedule and now I'm ready to begin a journal totally different than I've ever drink before. As I started it. I began to query if I should have done the outside and the cover or undergo left those for measure? I am thinking I ordain ruin it as I work on the inside pages. Any thoughts or enter on how you do your altered journal boardbooks (if you have gone that route before)???
