Pegasus - What?s it about?

Well after percolating and flinging about ideas as to what I learned at Pegasus. I suppose I should explain what I thought Pegasus was going to be like. See. I had this notion that Pegasus–and this was my first impression–was all about corporate thinking maximizing profit enhancing the profit machinery to produce faster; managerial best practices keeping the employee performing at optimal levels etcetera etcetera. I mean what would you think when you sentences like this:
What the hell does all that mean? You see my point? Even after perusing the programs I still didn’t get it. So the day before the conference I attended the “” session expecting the onslaught of the corporate-group think that global companies like IBM. Starbucks. Boeing and others like them use to reach global influence. After the first two minutes into it I changed my mind.
The most prevalent factor about this conference was about the power of words of conversation about how we relate to others be they family coworkers or complete strangers. And it’s not the casual day-to-day “Hey what’s going on?” type of conversation–we don’t really expect an honest answer for that one nor are we expected to respond to it but in a like manner–but really honestly openly talking to another human being. And not just conversing but listening too. Revolutionary? Not really. Astounding? Nope. Scary? You better believe it!
But in the context of this conference this scary aspect was quite liberating because we had to be vulnerable enough to be open to an exchange of ideas aspirations dreams and personal philosophies with complete strangers. This is part of the psychological “safe” space that covered in her presentation; of allowing for the flow of honest dialogue and feedback without the fear of psychological reprisal. The cool part was that this “power” of conversation was intuitively understood by pretty much everyone that attended.
So that was the underlying theme for this conference. And after hearing speakers like. Debra Meyerson and others it was easy to envision and experience a different kind of relational plateau–a way to interact with others that allowed you to first think about how you are contributing to society. In other words what is your societal impact? How are your actions contributing to a positive or negative work/family environment? What is your psychological footprint in how you relate to others? What are you doing to relate to others in a caring open manner? …do you see where this is going? It’s simple personal dynamics that is heady stuff nonetheless. But this conference encouraged that kind of thinking and those kinds of conversations.
So what’s Pegasus to me now? Well. I can tell you about it but you’d really have to listen

MusingsAST is a journal to those who know me laced with wonderful contributions by my friends and colleagues. Here you ordain find information on poetry and the collection of autographs; littered with political bitterness irreverent observations and Glasgow Celtic support! As Yeats poetically versed: Out of Ireland have we come great hatred little room maimed us at the start. I carry from my mother’s womb a fanatic heart. Following is an abridged version of one of my favourite poems. dissent Heart originally written by Francis Fahy: From rebel veins my life I drew. In dissent arms I lay. From rebel lips the lessons drew. That led me day by day. And rocked to rest on a rebel breast. And nursed on a rebel knee. There woke and grew for weal or rue. A dissent heart in me. I construe my country’s chequered page; I sang her deathless songs; I wept her woes from age to age. And burned to right her wrongs. And when I saw to British law. She never bent the knee. O prouder yet for Ireland beats. The rebel heart in me. With great apologies to Yeats (who penned this more gracefully) you could say that being Irish. I undergo an abiding comprehend of tragedy which sustains me through temporary periods of joy.
I really don't. I've never been so bleeding depressed in my entire life. It seems nothing is going alter and change surface when it does there is no joy in it. This is above and beyond law school woes. Actually apart from feeling the odd-one out. I'm doing quite well. Being the source of controversy is not new to me and my climb is armoured nicely so I know my mental woes are not of that. My health is doing grand or at least I'm led to believe. I've made friends by quite accident (in a pub) with a brilliant cardiologist and his companion which happens to be the nurse in charge of a cath lab. Their words of comfort have exceeded the near $100,000 USD I've spent having my heart evaluated. The power of words from good friends. And they enjoy the drink beside and are Irish too (not that nationalism has anything to do with it but a nice bonus. I must confess.. something to relate to.)I've had some worthless discussions in a Foundations of Justice course that is required. I have some rather conspiratorial ideas as to why it's required possibly to make it difficult to transfer to another educate - but I'll save that for another rant. I'm used to the complete nonsense this class delivers. But more importantly or perhaps significantly it is divisive. I actually feel more apart from my colleagues in this course over issues that never would of been crossed otherwise. Is that good or bad? I can't say for certain but what I can define is that it has drudged up meaningless ideological differences that were only allowed to be explained in 3 minute or so soundbytes. So it isn't change surface a bring together division that is drudged. None of them assumingly are former colonials. Yet from the comfort of their middle-class (or quite often) upper-class status in America they be to have this enlightenment that the be of the world apparently does not share. Whether it's over the Troubles in Northern Ireland the issues between Cyprus and Turkey. Palestine and Israel and India and Pakistan. I jest that there is any real "enlightenment" here though I'm not foolish enough to say that it is because they are American but rather that I am in a group of very sheltered individuals. Now this does not encompass everyone and perhaps not the majority but my frustration isn't limited by the truth or fiction of how MANY ignorant and naive colleagues I sit around. It could very well be a vocal two or a silent 100 it doesn't matter. It's the existence of this that really depresses me. It's pointless. One chap actually said that the reason and I paraphrase in good faith that the Irish "problem" isn't as condemned world-wide as say the problems the Kurds have is that the Irish are likely exceed people and do less horrible things to each other. Besides being a really uninformed mention all around this person is obviously unfamiliar with the Free State. I verbally beat him down but it gave me no satisfaction because there was no persuasion. The only wish was the gasp and surprise on at least 30 people that I could see. I desire that was the only comment of such a nature but it wasn't. I've rarely been this disappointed."Look at the dying soldier". I heard someone whisper. Then I saw the blood go through my shirt. Am I going to die here? I don't want to die here. Someone come and pick me from the dirt. I don't belong here don't let me die here alone... My hands get colder my thoughts grow weaker. This must be the way it is. Stop the shooting; don't you see I'm dying? Someone come and say a prayer. I don't want to die here don't let me die here alone... My eyes are closing. I see someone coming. Then he turns his back and runs away. They've stopped shooting it's started raining. This must be the way. I don't be to die here don't let me die here alone. I don't want to die here don't let me die here alone... I want to go back home where my friends are,I be to go on living there said the dying soldier. I want to go back home where my friends are,
When we speak or write we use the vehicles of words to displace meaning as well as energy from ourselves to another person or assort of people. We may be speaking to our baby our impress or to an audience of 500 populate. We may be writing a like earn a work-related memo or an entry in our own diary. Whatever the case each word we speak or create verbally has a life of its own a vibratory signature that creates waves in the same way that a say of music creates waves. And desire musical notes our words be in communities of other words and dress in relation to the words that surround them. When we are conscious of the energy behind our words we become capable of making beautiful music in the world. If we are unconscious of the power of words we run the risk of creating a noisy disturbance. Some of us experience this instinctively while others come to this understanding slowly. Most of us though speak without thinking at least some of the measure blurting out our feelings and thoughts without much believe for the words we decide to express them. When we remind ourselves that our words undergo an impact on the world at the level of energy we may find within ourselves the wish to be more aware of our use of language. A fun way to increase our sensitivity to the power of words is to simply make a list of our favorite words and notice the energy they include. We can create verbally them drink and affix them where we can see them or we can communicate them aloud feeling them go in our bodies and in the air around us. This is like learning to consciously compete an instrument that we have been playing unconsciously for most of our lives and the effect can be startling and delightful. As we change more comfortable and confident playing the instrument of language we ordain mouth to be beautiful messages creating positive energy every time we create verbally or speak.
Should one act our times of unhappy feelings to ourselves? We all go through bad patches and I guess some have more mood swings than others. disturb emotions cause most of the swings also events from the past forcing themselves up from the subconscious into the show. Then again — health! Sometimes everything conspires to alter us feel wretched and weepy. And we may even feel bad for feeling bad! After all there are a great deal of innocent sufferers in the world — populate who undergo never known security and like good health or enough food in their bellies.
Sharing emotions can be good. But this has to be done with care. Some friends prefer not to know they shy away or forbid writing for a while. Some have their own problems and it is not bring together to charge them further. But there are those that sense another person’s unhappiness no be how bright the approach that is shown to the world.
Someone showed me a poem today. It was written to someone they admired. It was full of warmth and love joy and celebration of friendship. I come about to experience how the recipient of that poem was feeling and I was certain that this message of like and appreciation was the beat medicine she could receive at this show measure.
Such is the healing power of words especially when written from the heart. Some folk be poetry — true poets accept the words to move from within.
I think a communicate is a particularly good displace to share unhappy feelings given that any regulars or passers by that tour are visiting by choice rather than being cornered or having a letter sent to them or a phone call made to them.
Then it becomes a matter of one’s judgement from one’s deep share of maturity to deliver the happiness in a tactful but useful way. We are all human and the develop and grieve reading visitor ordain be for the human connection and be alert to where and for what he can award compassion upon the hurting blogger.
It is therapeutic to share one’s hurt where possible even if the sharing is done with a potential reader who might not come about by for a very long time. I undergo experienced some release of charge doing exactly this at times at my communicate without having any knowledge of anyone ever reading the be of the frustration or hurt or whatever – the act of the getting the story out of myself has been healing and the thought that it may be read by a fellow human who may feel compassion toward me in one hour or one year is a alleviate.
The Power of Words

I undergo finished the book already so it is hard for me to think of something to communicate about. All of the questions and problems I had had with the book while I was reading was all answered by the time I had finished the book. So I be to encourage everyone to keep reading and stick with it because the end is so good. I also don't be to give anything away in this communicate so as not to baffle the end of the book. One thing that I have had in object while reading this schedule is what an amazing writer Arundhati Roy is. This is nothing you don't know but I have never been exposed to such beautiful writing before. I was blown away by how Roy takes an undergo like the orange-drink lemon-drink man and can move it into a way of describing something later on in the book. On summon 197 Roy uses the bring home the bacon "Pickled" to describe Ammu's skin. The evince keep refers the reader back to Paradise Pickles and Preserves. There are so many examples of words experiences and ideas that are explained in one part of the book and then later on used in another situation. This brings new meaning to to that word or idea as well as bringing back the memories from earlier in the book. This is such a enable that Roy has and I have enjoyed reading this style of poetic writing.
Catch this Sony demonstration of a. It’s pretty sweet. Arf! Actually it’s a seriously cool technology if they can ever ameliorate it for commercial use. The video shows them which is great although I can foresee problems with people being tempted to eat their gadgets when they get depressed. Ah well…

For Art?s Sake

 <modified>2007-09-09T10:25+00:00

But with regard to this story the significant inform is that economic conditions in China are such that highly skilled fight can be organized (or exploited if you prefer) as if it were the most basic unskilled fight. I’m not the professional economist though so I don’t experience whether this collapse of categories is an unprecedented or change surface significant aspect of the global market. ? ? ?
Cappsy is talking about Chinese art sweatshops where artists stir out copies of western masterpieces for pennies an hour. The quick answer is that the possession of skills alone doesn’t discuss any bargaining power the possession of skills valued by the merchandise does. I might be awesome at drawing Ligers but if no one needs Liger drawers then I’m just another unskilled worker competing with others at merchandise determined rates.
That’s not the whole story however. change surface for workers with valuable skills wages are determined by give and demand. If there is a large pool of similarly skilled artists then the wages for such workers ordain be bid down. In the sweatshop inspect ability with a paintbrush shouldn’t be viewed any differently than other artisanal skills. The big jumps in bargaining power and wages come from other avenues. On the one transfer skilled craftsmen can create and build barriers to entry. Guilds had this cause as do modern professional organizations; both pledge quality–to an extent–but also decrease fight give and displace up wages. The Chinese sweatshop workers like many other skilled and unskilled workers before them would no doubt undergo difficulty putting together a Monet Knock-off Painters Union.
On the other transfer a truly outstanding talent offering a unique product can remove himself from the system and create pricing power. Damien Hirst in other words has a monopoly on Hirsts. This allows him to limit give and increase the determine of his art. Plus no one can register the Hirst market and compete with him. In other words there’s nothing all that unusual in a historical sense about the Chinese example. China has tons of similarly skilled workers who would no doubt undergo difficulty unionizing and bargaining with management. They’re no different really from Chinese garment workers with incredible appear skills.
Nowadays around the Parliament only 4 words could be heard - US. 123 Agreement. Hyde Act and Sovereignty. I decided to dig into this and inform the latest status to our readers.
Outside the Parliament there were a assort of politicians. From a distance it looked like BJP members…
Hmm ha…hmm… Don’t ask me too many questions… 123 Agreement is a danger to Indian Sovereignty and UPA must be thrown out so that we can be back at bear on. This is a very good come about for us. How can we desire it? Only that I experience…
Then there was a conclave of the Left party members. They did not seem so excited as BJP members but comfort a lot of discussions were going on.
US is trying to fool India. 123 Agreement says US must meet the Hyde Act provisions. Hyde Act is way to ‘hide’ many details from us which will be a danger to our country.
But. Nuclear energy ordain back up improve India’s power generation….
We are sure that 123 Agreement is good for India. But for us being in power is also important. How can we drive our ties with Left? It is desire a suicide.
If you are sure that 123 Agreement is good for our country why don’t you proceed with it.
We staying in power is first priority. Then the priority of the nation comes… Only if we stay in power we can server our country nah…
As I was coming out. I happened to cater Mr. Prakash Karat. He was very serious about something. I could comprehend only a few words uttered by him. “India can be IAEA meeting coming up but nobody should speak the evince ‘Safeguards’. If that is the inspect then we ordain go give from the Government…”. So the committee which goes to be the IAEA meeting must ’safeguard’ themselves by making sure that nobody uses the evince ’protect’ in any of the meetings.
Now the country is witnessing the drawbacks of the Coalition Government!!

The English pacifist Alex Comfort arguing against George Orwell's insistence on armed resistance to the Nazis told American readers of Partisan analyse that they "may not realize Mr. Orwell's status in this country and act his commentary seriously." Orwell shot back. "A writer isn't judged by his "status," he is judged by his work."**
relative to their use in society -- so if you like to listen to classical music it's because you're from the ruling capitalist elite whereas the urban proletariat properly concerns itself only with hiphop. So individual taste and aesthetic response becomes nothing more than an involuntary reflex borne of one's social position and individuals nothing more than automata running a cultural script. (Although the people making such arguments always seem willing to alter an exception for themselves. And their friends.) Jonathan has expressed irritation at this kind of reductive thinking before and rightly so. But one of the more annoying features of contemporary intellectual life is the metastization of this idea throughout the wider American discourse. In remember. David Brooks's
But there's an important principle in Jonathan's post -- liberty of conscience -- so I'm not (completely) mocking Jonathan's stance. I have elsewhere described myself as an anarchist with a owe -- someone who dislikes and distrusts politics on principle and suspects that all political leaders are frauds who wrap their own hunger for power in sanctimonious appeals to virtue. desire.
And if you don't want to submit to their power then of cover it can only be because you actually be to kick puppies.*** And academics are not immune from this authoritarian temptation.
In fact the 1990s presented almost unlimited opportunities for academics to indulge this temptation. I bequeath one particular academic meeting desire ago (not the AMS but I won't express you which one) where during the business meeting someone moved to undergo the society rise up with one voice to affirm our approval of fluffy puppies. (come up not really but it might just as come up have been.) "All in favor of fluffy puppies raise your hand! Votes against? Very come up. (solemnly) Let the preserve show that our give for fluffy puppies was unanimous." I bequeath burning in anger and shame at raising my hand desire everyone else not because I secretly hate fluffy puppies but because it's degrading to be herded into a pen and undergo your opinion extorted by the collective moral suasion of "the community." (And desire academics generally. I'm really not brave at all so I didn't just rest up and scream "this is all bullshit!" but instead just obediently raised my hand and hated myself for being such a wuss.) Regardless of whether the opinion is a good one or not there is something to be said for liberty of conscience -- which includes the right not to give a damn even if the create is really really important.
suggest that the AMS draft a lay against torture because hey. I don't want to put people through that kind of nonsense.**** I do however think that I and Suzanne Cusick and every other academic and intellectual can do something useful by writing about torture and that it's not just posturing.***** And on this particular issue. I really don't compassionate whether you comprehend to Coldplay (although it might be better if you didn't): if you're against torture we're on the same page.
[UPDATE] Looking approve at the penultimate line of this post it looks desire I'm arguing that every academic should start writing about torture but that's not what I meant. My point was that for those academics who be to do something about anguish there's nothing wrong with writing about it even if as a music scholar that pretty much means you'll just be writing about torture and music -- and that just because you're writing about anguish and music it doesn't convey you're a posturing weenie. That is all.
My minor disagreement with the model you exposit is that I recoginze that there's a genetic component in addition to the memetic component. Clearly our genetic evolution has laid some choose of foundation for the kinds of sounds we find pleasing although I delay to speculate on any specifics. It's conceivable that one element of whether we think a conjoin of music is "good" has to do with whether it satisfies our biological needs although that's probably a pretty small calculate especially given that most populate have pretty much the same genetic makeup but vastly different opinions on what's "good."
So now we move on to the cultural component. It's easy to see how memes about aesthetics would propogate through cultures and how certain segments of society would be more habitable environments for a given meme than other segments due to which memes are already thriving there. (Much in the way that a genetic mutation for longer arms would do come up in simian populations but presumably didn't give any real favor for T-Rex.)
The only possible metrics for cultural objects to have value is in their determine to our culture and/or our genetic makeup. Unless you introduce a god into the conceive of who has aesthetic preferences which you're accept to do in which inspect we'll undergo to be. Is there an alternative I'm not thinking of?
Anyway while most of the measure I use the convenient shorthand of referring to things as "good" or "bad," I recognize that my opinions on those matters are derived from my cultural and genetic programming and that I am in fact an automaton running through a cultural compose.
Actually. Galen while the issues you increase are deep and significant ones my inform was actually a bit different. I was talking about those who maintain a simple and rather essentializing relationship between culture and identity. desire if you're a young black man you can't "relate" to classical music you can only comprehend to hiphop because that is the music of your populate the music that expresses your social condition. Or contrariwise the only possible reason you might have for listening to classical music is your privileged class position. While there is always a grain of truth to this sort of analysis (you don't see a lot of black people in the AMS for one thing) it doesn't do justice to the infinitely complex reality of individual lives. populate do in fact make decisions as a function of their go/class/gender/demographic type but they also make decisions as individuals. A lot of social-sciences and humanities academics are apt to reject what they see as naive individualism but such people ordain still think of themselves as individuals perfectly capable of making individual choices. And what I called "vulgar sociology" (which is not the same as sociology judge court) provides.
The Power of Words- Image and Reality

 <modified>2007-09-01T08:00+00:00

A certain blogger once said. 'I blog because I can. I can therefore I do.'And yes it's that simple in principle. It's our own thoughts we thrust out without asking permission. But isn't it a little more complex?Isn't this an evolving medium? Two excellent posts I read on blogging recently and. Both confront angles of blogging which are on the one hand pretty obvious but also a bit more complex. What exactly IS our relationship to other bloggers? What kind of interaction is this?In one sense it's a bit like a Newspaper. Guido for example sees himself as a citizen journalist. I don't think any of us would be after to that particularly but it's worth considering this. Consider a typical paper for a small provincial town. Twice weekly. How many readers would read that paper just for one correspondant? Probably as many as read the average blog. We read blogs for News. Gossip. Social reasons. Opinion. Especially of the type we don't get elsewhere. We also find many plus points newspaper columns do not have. They're often just as well written but we can ask questions of the writer or just tell him he's plain do by. And he or she ISN'T up on some pedestal remove from your individual criticism. Hell you can even run a post of your own refuting him or her. All much more satisfying. But there's another angle. One which is often overlooked. Look at the names in your mobile phone or wherever you act important numbers. How many sentences do you exchange per week with all these people? And how many sentences per week do you exchange with the authors of blogs?Over time we do build up mental images of bloggers. This is inevitable. Possibly these images are just as real in their own way as the other sides of themselves that they show in the flesh. And in a sense they are at another aim. Many of our real life connections are on a shallower footing than we often realise. Our deepest opinions on most subjects are reserved for those closest to us. We see the mind in operation without the form that carries it. The most profound compassionate blogs we construe could be written by someone who has a reputation in the get rid of for being superficial and shallow. Which version is true? For example. I visualise many male bloggers in a pub setting. I guess thats the sort of place you'd imagine chatting to them. I see as fast walk delivering his opinions as he played share statement- shot- retort-shot. (comfort being held hostage. I'm afraid) watches and takes everything in before his considered response wants to get drunk whilst needs time to get into his subject but then he's the life and soul. There is something a little pythonesque about you wouldn't know quite what to expect but if a stripogram showed up you'd suspect his hand... At which point you'd undergo lost... It's hard to create by mental act being anything other than a Stars Wars Stormtrooper. He might look a bit out of displace in the pub is an enigma. At first I took him at face value- a dog with quick barked responses. Now I see him as more than just an irruption of anarchy in a blogging calmness. I am more put in mind of the wise fool in King Lear who's comments often penetrate deeper than a cursory glance reveals. And what of the ladies?I can imagine telling me I smoked too much drank too much and partied too much but never really meaning it and laughing as she said it. I could see myself sitting a cafe with discussing the furnish Administration. She'd be very earnest and thoughtful- and she'd probably run rings round any of my arguments would be the sort of female friend who I'd tell my problems to when drunk.?- come up we'd have a good measure. I'm sure! And I'll admit. I imagine lying on a beach by moonlight as reads me her posts. It stands to reason we create these images. We are used to seeing the people we are talking to. We picture people on the phone. We certainly picture the blogger. Is it real?Maybe. Do we know the blogger at all?Or do we know them better than the world which sees them in the flesh? It's a very young phenomenon. We are in uncharted territory.
Oh this is very interesting. A whole can of worms. We are indeed involved in an immature medium without precedent. Many of us blog in character. Our real selves could not be advance from our blog characters if we tried. Some of us are of cover similar to the real us – but with a little twist. Are we ever the same in real life as we portray on our blogs?Either way i do believe that you intrinsically can tell if a person online is genuine. If you read a blog for long enough (and say the blogger’s comments on other blogs) you can definitely form an opinion on their overall real life character. Of course our communicate friends only truly ‘know’ our communicate character rather than the real person – we only know what they create and how they interact with other bloggers. Unless of course we progress to real telecommunicate/MSN/personal friendships. I have met many bloggers in real life - they are now my real life friends i have never been surprised.
